The head coach underlined that the team will try to win against Sevilla to put the cherry on top of a fantastic season
Villarreal manager Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media on Saturday ahead of the team’s final LALIGA fixture of the season, which sees them face Sevilla on Sunday at 4:15pm CEST at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
Although Villarreal have already secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League, the head coach insisted the team will be going for the win: “We want to win. It is time to enjoy what we have achieved, but also to try and reach 70 points. That would make us the third-best team in the second half of the season. We have to aim for that and celebrate with our fans, our last home win and Champions League qualification. We are playing at home. It is a day to thank the players for their huge effort and to thank the fans for being with us.”
Along the same lines, Marcelino stressed that the team deserve to enjoy the moment after all the hard work: “We are really happy with what we have accomplished. It is a match for the players to enjoy to the fullest, for their commitment, hard work, humility and human quality. Also for how they have overcome every obstacle to get here. From this position of joy, we want to win and end the season with what would be a sixth consecutive victory.”
The Asturian coach also reflected on the journey that led to achieving the ambitious goal of reaching the Champions League, which was sealed last Sunday against FC Barcelona: “I arrived a year and a half ago in a tough situation. And thanks to everyone’s hard work, we have turned things around and secured Champions League football. We have won five matches in a row to finish strong, and we earned a key victory away to Betis when they were in good form. All I feel is joy and gratitude to be part of a club like this.”
Finally, Marcelino confirmed that, after the summer, the team will approach their Champions League return with maximum ambition: “It will be very demanding. We have to build a competitive squad because we will be facing massive clubs, but we will do so with great happiness and with the aim of reaching the next round.”
