The Asturian coach highlighted the team’s high level and defensive solidity after the emphatic win over the side from Madrid
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media following the important and hard-earned 4-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
“We’re very satisfied. Rayo push you to the limit in many phases of the match, they move the ball very quickly. We were defensively solid and barely conceded anything. We scored good goals, so I’m very pleased. It’s not easy at all to beat Rayo 4-0, especially given their good run of form,” said the Asturian coach.
Marcelino stressed the need to keep improving and avoid any complacency, while underlining his satisfaction with the team’s performance. “That’s three consecutive clean sheets for us, and this result confirms that we’re in a very good moment.”
The Villarreal boss also praised Gerard Moreno’s outstanding display: “He was the best player for much of the match. At his best, he’s a decisive player. He has a double sense of self-demand – to avoid injuries and perform at the highest level. We’re very happy for Gerard. Until just a couple of games ago, we didn’t have Gerard or Ayoze available, and now we can finally enjoy both of them.”
Looking ahead to Wednesday’s Champions League match, Marcelino emphasised the importance of winning away from home and maintaining their strong run of form: “We’ll approach it with humility, because it will be a tough game. We have to defend well, attack with purpose and win. That’s the most important thing. If we do that, we’ll be in a strong position with plenty of teams behind us.”
