The Villarreal head coach excited to begin an exciting Copa del Rey journey (Wednesday, 9pm CET)
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media ahead of the Yellow Submarine’s Copa del Rey debut against CD Ciudad de Lucena, which will be played this Wednesday at 9pm CET at the Estadio Ciudad de Lucena. In the build-up to this first-round tie, the coach highlighted the importance of approaching the game “with respect, humility and the right mentality” to avoid any surprises.
Respecting the opponent and maintaining concentration
The Villarreal boss insisted on the need to respect Lucena and remain fully focused from the very start: “We know that this Copa format can be tough. Respecting the opponent means respecting ourselves. They have won all their home matches and will treat this as the game of the year. Winning will not be easy, but it is our duty.”
A competitive line-up with opportunities for everyone
Marcelino explained that the team will feature a line-up made up mostly of first-team players, with some rotations: “We will field almost an entirely first-team line-up. We have a large squad, and everyone must feel part of it. Those who play tomorrow have all already started games this season, except for Altimira, who deserves it for his hard work. If you are a Villarreal player, you have the quality to start.”
Rotation in goal
As for the goalkeepers, the Villarreal coach confirmed there will be rotation: “We will make changes based on performance. Luiz will not play, but I have not yet decided who will start. Our goal is to have everyone ready to compete.”
Growth and room for improvement
The Asturian coach expressed optimism about the team’s progress despite the demanding schedule: “We have made many signings and are playing every three days, which means we have little time to train. That requires an adaptation period, especially for young players and those coming from abroad. We have a good squad, a great attitude, and room to grow. Day-to-day work is enjoyable, and that gives us confidence.”
Step by step, but with ambition
Finally, Marcelino emphasised the importance of focusing on the present without looking too far ahead: “We cannot look beyond this game. In this competition, you can reach a final after just eight matches, but the first step is to beat Lucena. We must show energy and determination on the pitch if we want to go far.”
