Marcelino thanks the squad for their commitment after achieving the target for the season
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral praised the team’s outstanding collective effort after securing a long-awaited qualification for the UEFA Champions League, confirmed with a thrilling 2-3 victory over FC Barcelona.
“This is a huge reward for the squad and for our supporters, something we’ve all achieved together,” said the manager. “We’re extremely proud that this win guarantees us a place in the Champions League, pulling well ahead of Real Betis, who have competed with us right up until today.”
Marcelino pointed out that few had backed Villarreal’s chances at the beginning of the campaign, but the team has surpassed expectations through hard work and smart planning. “Not many people thought on 10th July that we could finish in a Champions League spot,” he noted. “But we prepared well, and we’re sincerely grateful, both personally and on behalf of the entire coaching staff.”
Reflecting on the significance of this achievement, the coach was clear. “Given the way football is today, qualifying for the Champions League gives you a financial boost of course, but above all, it allows you to enjoy the best club competition in the world. We’re in the Champions League, now it’s time to enjoy it and look ahead to next season with maximum enthusiasm.”
