The Yellows coach praised the effort and performance of his players against Atlético de Madrid
Villarreal CF coach Marcelino García Toral has appeared before the media at a press conference after the 2-2 draw against Atlético de Madrid.
Here are the key things the Yellow Submarine’s head coach had to say:
Assessment of the match
“A draw is a fair result. Small details in favour of either team could have decided the game, but I believe the draw is the fairest result and the stats support that. It’s a shame not to have gone into half-time ahead I am very satisfied. I’m happy and proud of the players’ effort, their performance and the match we played against a great team.”
Complete team performance
“I liked how we played throughout the match, but it’s also true that there were specific moments in the first half, particularly defensively, where we could have done better. It’s clear that we played a good and very complete match. The players who started gave everything and they did things very well with and without the ball, and the players who came on also did very well.”
Fighting for fourth place and the defensive side of things
“We have to think game by game. Before 31st August, when the market closes, we have four competitive matches. There are 12 points at stake and we have to get as many as possible. From here on, when the squad is put together, we will see if we are capable of being a more solid team than last season and more competitive. Hopefully we will be able to repeat our offensive numbers but what is inevitable is that we have to change our defensive numbers. Hopefully we’ll be able to improve in that area compared to last season because that will bring us closer to the top positions.”
Next games coming up soon
“It’s the first time we’ve played four games in the month of August. I don’t think it’s very logical that we have to play three games in such a short space of time. Us being the last ones to play this weekend puts you in a delicate situation. Those who played on Thursday have four or five days more than the others to play the same games. But we have to compete. Now we have to recover from today’s great physical effort. There are no excuses and we have to compete every game at the highest level.”
