A best ever first half of the season performance for Villarreal CF as visitors in the First Division (17 points)
With the historic victory at the Santiago Bernabéu under their belts to finish the first round of games of the 2017/18 campaign, the Yellows have put together their best first half of the season performance in the history of their participation in the First Division with a total of 17 points. The Yellow Submarine has achieved this against opponents of great potential, among their significant wins are those against Celta (0-1), Valencia (0-1) and Real Madrid (0-1), as well as draws against Atlético Madrid (1-1) and Athletic Club (1-1).
Villarreal have played eleven away matches with 5 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses, which is the best first half of the season record in the club’s history. In the 2013/14 season the team picked up 16 points away from home in 9 matches with 5 wins, a draw and 3 losses.
The Submarine equal their third best position
With 31 points, Villarreal has finished the first half of this year’s LaLiga campaign by equalling their third best finish in history in the table, currently in 5th place after 19 league matches. Only in the 2015/16 (4th) and 2010/11 (3rd) seasons have the Submarine finished higher in Spain’s top flight. The Yellows were also in 5th position after the first round of games in 2013/14, 2008/09, 2007/08 and 2003/04 seasons.
In fact, Villarreal have finished this first half of the league in a similar rhythm in terms of of points and results as seasons when they have qualified for the Europa League. It should also be mentioned that Javi Calleja has not been able to count on some of his key players due to a bad run of injuries.
In terms of points, in the 18 seasons that the Submarine has competed in the First Division, this is the seventh best season with 31 points in the bag as it stands.
