Pedraza confirms that the team are feeling good and reassures fans that La Liga has only just started
With the majority of the players who left the club for international duty now back in Vila-real, Javi Calleja was able to use nearly all of the footballers available to him – apart from Ramiro Funes Mori – in his squad. Two of the last to return from their travels were Pablo Fornals and Alfonso Pedraza, who helped ‘La Rojita’ qualify for the 2019 European U21 Champions, which will be held in Italy and San Marino.
Pedraza in particular shone in the 3-0 win over Albania, where he returned to Córdoba, where he grew up, and was one of the best players on the pitch at the Nuevo Arcángel, providing an assist for Spain’s third. “I am very happy to be able to play where I grew up. I don’t get the opportunity to do that very much, but to be able to get a win with my friends and family there is always very special,” explained the Yellows academy product.
After having returned from his national side, Pedraza is now completely focused on his club team, with Villarreal facing an important match this Sunday (12pm CEST) against CD Leganés. He said: “We’re expecting an intense game. At home, they are very good, but we’re working hard to get the three points.”
Furthermore, the versatile footballer underlined that there are still a lot of games to be played and that the team is ready to turn things around after starting the season without a win so far. “There is a lot of the season left. We’ve played three games and every game is important. The squad is strong and is made up of footballers who have a lot of quality. Without getting too far ahead of ourselves, we’ve now got a few weeks coming up where we have a lot of games. It’s vital to be in good shape physically to cope with that,” he concluded.
