The side coached by Jordi Ferriols overcame CD Alba Fundación without complications
Villarreal Women got their Copa de la Reina campaign off to a great start. Jordi Ferriols’ team defeated CD Alba Fundación Femenino in a very complete attacking performance, with Gigi Moreira, Sara Medina, Alexia Jr and María Romero all making their mark.
Villarreal created danger from the very first minutes of the match. In fact, María Romero had a clear chance in the fourth minute which went over the crossbar. The reward came just a few minutes later, when Gigi Moreira opened the scoring after a fine team move (1-0, 11’).
The Albacete side, coached by Virginia García, did not back down and saw their opportunity in the 35th minute. Laura Ortega capitalised on a turnover and, spotting goalkeeper Mar Segarra off her line, surprised with a long-range effort that found the back of the net (1-1). Villarreal’s response was immediate. Practically in the next move, after a great individual action from Luna Figols, Sara Medina restored the lead for the home side (2-1). Just before the break, Alexia Jr extended the advantage with another strike (3-1).
After the restart, Villarreal Women maintained control of the game and continued to create chances. The fourth goal came in the 61st minute. María Macías smashed a powerful direct free-kick against the crossbar and, quick to react to the rebound, María Romero made no mistake. The Castellón-born midfielder sealed the final score at 4-1.
With this victory, Villarreal Women booked their place in the second round of the Copa de la Reina.
