The twelfth chapter of Centenary Memories takes a closer look at the historic rise to the elite
Villarreal CF has launched a new instalment of Centenary Memories. This chapter, the twelfth in the documentary series, takes us back to Villarreal CF’s historic and well-remembered promotion to the top flight.
On 24th May 1998, in Santiago de Compostela, Villarreal CF worked the miracle. The club was celebrating its sixth consecutive season in the second tier, Fernando Roig’s first as president of the club, when the team coached by Irulegui pulled off a surprise and with an incredible goal by Alberto Saavedra in San Lázaro (1-1), the groguets became a Primera División team.
The documentary reviews this memorable milestone in the history of Villarreal CF through the voices of Fernando Roig, president of the club; Fernando Roig Negueroles, CEO; José Manuel Llaneza, former vice-president of Villarreal CF; Pep Serer, former player from the squad that won promotion to the First Division in 97/98; Javi Mata, journalist from Vila-real; Julián García Candau, journalist from Vila-real; and Toni Pitarch, author of the lyrics of the Villarreal CF anthem.
