Santi Comesaña has underlined the need for being strong at home to seal the aim of returning to European competition
Santi Comesaña appeared before the media on Wednesday to analyse the current situation at Villarreal CF, who will host Real Sociedad at the Estadio de la Cerámica this Sunday at 4:15pm CEST.
The midfielder assessed the recent outstanding win against Betis at the Villamarín: “We’re very happy to have won there. It was important, but not decisive. There’s still a long way to go. But it was very valuable to beat them to stop their good dynamic. We suffered, but we enjoyed it a lot.”
The Yellows No.14 has highlighted that the form has been good, even before the win against Betis: “We were all convinced that we had been doing things right. Also against Madrid and Athletic, although we didn’t get the result we were looking for. If we play the way we have been playing, we will lose very few games.”
With regard to having a worse home record than away, Comesaña does not blame it on psychological factors: “It’s not a mental thing. We always put in as much effort at home as we do away. It doesn’t worry us. We know we need to improve, but if we keep going like this, we’re going to win a lot of games.”
In reference to the next rival, Real Sociedad, the Galician footballer pointed out that they are a tough opponent, and that the Groguets will try to impose themselves on them: ‘They’re always a tough team. We didn’t deserve to lose there. We had more chances than them. We have to do the same as we did in the first meeting. If we repeat a performance like that, most of the time, we’ll win the game.”
As for the aims, Comesaña puts the focus on fighting for fourth place until the end: “I think the maximum objective is the Champions League, but we’d like to be able to reach fourth place. It’s better to look up than down. If you don’t, you get scared. It’s better to try to catch Athletic.”
Finally, the midfielder praised the competition he has with Pape Gueye and Dani Parejo, who are driving the level of the Submarine up: “The level of competitiveness in training is what makes us play well on the pitch. Pape, Dani and myself fighting for those two positions makes you raise the level because if you don’t you know you’re not going to play. That’s good for the team.”
