Javi Calleja recognises that the blue and whites were better than Villarreal over the 90 minutes
Villarreal head coach Javi Calleja appeared in front of the media to analyse the Yellows defeat in the RCDE Stadium (3-1). For the manager, the result was ‘fair’ against an Espanyol side who ‘deserved the victory’. “Espanyol did more than enough to win the game. They started very strong and were superior to us. Especially in the opening minutes. As the game went on, we got back into it and made it more even. The second half was more competitive but they scored and took control of the match. We could have equalised with Gerard’s chance, but we weren’t able to do so. At the end of the game, I think it was a fair result,” he explained.
Calleja underlined his belief in the team’s abilities to turn around the negative dynamic: “We have to lift our heads up. We need to get out of the situation we’re in. We came here with the idea of winning and getting close to the European spots. We’re leaving with no points and we need to self evaluate what went wrong. We need to use the international break to look for solutions to what’s going wrong and analyse our current situation.”
