Jaume Costa is sure that the team will go for victory against Getafe CF

Yellows defender Jaume Costa appeared in front of the press to analyse the current goings-on regarding the Yellows ahead of Saturday’s match with Getafe CF at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez (4:15pm CEST).

The Yellows No.11 underlined that, despite having mathematically confirmed survival, the team will try and get the three points against José Bordalás’ team: “Although we’ve confirmed survival in Primera, on Saturday we are going to go for everything against Getafe. We’re going to face up to the game like we should do, giving everything at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. We want to finish as high as possible in the table and to get three points. However, as they showed here, they’re a good team, so it will a very tough match.”

After the suffering of this season, the left-back recognised that the squad is happy to have achieved their main aim: “We’re conscious that it hasn’t only been a tough year for us, but for the fans too and for everyone who loves this club. It’s been a terrible year because we’ve gone from being at a high level for a years, getting into Europe, to fighting to not go down. I believe that you always learn more from the bad moments than from the good ones. This year, all of us who love the club have learned taht with hard work and sacrifice, you can reach your goals. We’re very happy because the team’s hard work has paid off.”

The Yellows defender emphasised that unity within the dressing room was key to staying up: “Despite things going badly, we’ve always geed each other on. At the end, you can’t control your emotions, and all that we’ve experienced this season came out after the final whistle against SD Eibar. Some cried with happiness, and others with helplessness because it’s been a tough year.”

Costa admitted that he always believed in the team: “Since the beginning, I believed that the squad was apt and able to take on this season like it should have, but at the end, due to different factors or odd moments, it hasn’t been like we originally thought it was going to be. We though that after so many good years, we weren’t going to suffer so much, but LaLiga is more competitive each year, teams get stronger and the TV rights are more equal, so that means that teams can bring in better players. Moreover, this year, we’ve seen that everyone competes and we’ve also had to match that.”

One of the Yellows vice-captains, he believes that the season didn’t go well, but he is clear that he is going to strengthen as much as possible to have a better season next year: “At the end, we achieved our main aim, which was survival, but each one of us needs to analyse our errors and mistakes, and learn from them. I’m conscious that this year, I haven’t been at the level I should have been at, but next year, I need to try and return stronger to help the team. Each one of us needs to bring something, whether it’s on or off the pitch. We’re here to work and give all of us with the aim of staying up and taking the club to where it deserves to be. I’m convinced that next year, Villarreal will have a great team.”

Finally, the left-back put the season into perspective: “We’ve been in the top flight for six or seven years, since we came up. Every year, we’ve done things that no other team has done, as since we went up, we’d always qualified for Europe. That’s very hard to do, but it was possible thanks to all the first-team players, as well as the reserve players, who have brought a lot to the team for that to happen. This has been a bad year, and within the bad situation, we’ve been able to stay up with a game left. We’re conscious that we’ve done some things badly, but we have to try and see the positives and that is that we’re going to have the chance to improve things next season. I’m not saying we’re going to get into Europe, but we’re going to go game by game, trying to get as many points as possible. We’ll try and stay up as soon as possible, and try and aspire to more important things, like a title, but I’ll be happy if we don’t suffer as much as this season.”
