Villarreal Women lose to the side from Murcía in their first match of 2025
Villarreal Women were unable to open 2025 with a win as they lost 0-2 to Alhama CF, the current second-placed team in the Primera Federación. Despite trying until the final whistle, Virginia García’s side were unable to pick up their first points of the second half of the competition.
In the early stages of the game, Villarreal Women suffered the first blow. Ex-yellow Belén Martínez pokedt the ball into the back of the net after Alba’s cross was loose in the box, giving the visitors the lead (0-1, m. 7). Just a few minutes later, Belén herself caused another scare with a cross-shot which, fortunately for Virginia García’s side, went wide.
The home side found it hard to generate an attacking threat, however, and the two clearest chances came just before half-time from Lauris and Lucía Gómez.
The first shot went wide, the second was saved by Nay Cáceres.
The half-time break helped the home side, who took to the pitch more organised, with more control of the ball and more danger close to the opposition’s box. The introduction of Irene Miguélez and Lucía Romero also allowed them to increase their intensity, both offensively and defensively. In fact, in the 59th minute Aixa went close from a cross by Nerea Vicente and in the 65th minute it was Lucía Romero who had another great chance, but the ball ended up in the hands of the rival goalkeeper. The clearest chance came from Lauris, who beat all the defenders before crashing the ball against the post.
However, when Virginia García’s players were at their best, Alba took advantage of a counter-attack to find herself alone on the edge of the area and beat Montse Quesada to score the second and final goal for Alhama CF (0-2, m.85).
