Calleja wants his side to make their “good play” from their first fixtures count with a win vs Girona FC
Villarreal CF Manager, Javi Calleja, analysed this Firday’s match against Girona FC (Estadio de la Cerámica, 10pm CEST) in the pre-match press conference. The Yellows boss recognised that winning the three points will come as a result of continuing on the same track they have been on in their previous two games: “We have picked up very few points for the work and good play that we’ve exhibited in these first two matches. We need to validate these good performances with a win. Against Sevilla, we created chances and were solid at the back. We have to continue on this track to get our first win”.
In terms of his predictions for the match, Calleja believes it will be a fight between the Yellow Submarine and Girona for the possession of the ball. “They’re a team with vertical, quick attacking players who find into space well. Their philosophy has changed from last year. Now, they put a lot more importance on keeping the ball. Their build up play is good from the back and they link up really well”, the Yellows boss warned.
Lastly, the Villarreal boss highlighted the improvement shown by Yellows captain, Bruno Soriano, in the last few days: “He’s improving progressively. This Thursday he has rejoined the group for training. At the moment, he is training alternately with us. Next week we’ll increase that load. We’re really happy with his progress”.
