The Villarreal coach hailed the Yellows’ great performance against Atlético
Villarreal manager Javi Calleja praised his players after an impressive match against Atlético Madrid. “We put in our best performance of the season. Despite the result, we came away strong. We minimised our opponents’ strengths and we grew into the game and went for more as it went on. We showed character and we dominated in the opposition area. This is the path to follow,” he said.
For Calleja, the odd mistake should not lower the Submarine’s morale: “We had brilliant moments against a tough opponent. In fact, it was [Jan] Oblak’s saves that kept Atlético in the match and gave them a point. Our objective is to play good football. The goals will end up coming. With the offensive style we are working on, I am sure that the goals will come.”
The head coach underlined that this match will strengthen the group: “This match will strengthen us ahead of Thursday’s game. We are happy with the work we put in and the style of play. We know the importance of Thursday’s match and we’re convinced we can get a win that will put us towards the top of the group.”
With regards to the return of Santi Cáseres, Calleja underlined his happiness: “Cáseres’ return is very important for us. When he came on, he played really well.”
