Villarreal have qualified for European competition for the 16th time in 21 top-flight seasons
Europe, we’re back. Villarreal have qualified directly for the Group Stage of the UEFA Europa League 2020/21. With this upcoming participation, out of 21 seasons in the top flight of Spanish football (including the next campaign), 16 will have seen European football (14 without counting the Intertoto Cup). A tremendous achievement.
Villarreal’s first European match was on Saturday 6th July 2002 against FH Hafnarfjördur in the Intertoto Cup and the most recent was on 18th April 2019 against Valencia CF in the UEFA Europa League. After a season without European football, the Yellow Submarine is back in continental competition.
Throughout their European participation, Villarreal have managed to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2005/06, the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 2003/04 and the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League in the 2010/11 and 2015/16 seasons.
