The Yellows number 1 is the league’s least scored on goalkeeper after his clean sheet against Sevilla
A Yellow brick wall. Sergio Asenjo kept yet another clean sheet in the match against Sevilla FC at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium, establishing himself as the goalkeeper to have conceded the fewest goals in the LaLiga Santander so far this season, with just 14 goals conceded in 21 matches (0.67 per game). In fact, Villarreal boast their best defensive numbers in history at this stage of the season in the Spanish top flight. The goalkeeper from Palencia made save after save against the Andalusian side and even stopped Nasri’s penalty kick. For this reason, Asenjo has been chosen as the Five Star Player of the match.
“It was a great match by the whole team. If we don’t all put the work in it’s impossible to take away something positive from the Pizjuán stadium, but we did just that. We have to really value this point. The team knew it was an important match and we went out there switched on. We have to learn to go out there and play like this when we play against lower down teams too”, Asenjo commented.
The Submarine’s number 1 did not want to blow his own trumpet though: “There are days when you’re inspired and feel good on the pitch. I’m happy because [my performance] helped the team to pick up a point. I try to do my job the best I can. This time I felt very comfortable and I hope it helps me to keep progressing”.
Asenjo has his feet on the ground. “In the same way that I didn’t get too down on myself when I made a mistake, I’m not going to puff my chest out too much now. I just hope to keep progressing to help Villarreal. I learnt a lot from what happened against Valencia. Goalkeepers learn from our mistakes and I hope it doesn’t happen to me again. I knew how to recover though and have kept clean sheets for the last two matches”, he asserted.
Lastly and with regard to the trophy for the goalkeeper to have conceded the fewest goals, Asenjo prefers not to get obsessed: “I don’t lose any sleep over the Zamora trophy. The most important thing is that come May we’re all in the position we we want to be in. If I get this award in the end it’s welcome”.
