The Villarreal B head coach says his team will be “brave” in a “challenging” division
New Villarreal B head coach David Albelda has expressed his excitement ahead of a demanding season in Primera Federación. After an impressive campaign in charge of Villarreal C, where he narrowly missed out on the promotion play-offs, the Valencian coach now takes on the challenge of leading the Yellow Submarine’s B team.
Great excitement
“I am really excited. It is quite a big change. All the pitches have natural grass and some of our opponents have even played in the top flight. Primera Federación is a tough, different and very attractive competition for our players.
I joined the club a season and a half ago and things have gone well so far. Now, following Miguel’s departure, a gap has opened and the club has chosen me to fill it. I am full of enthusiasm. We all work to move up to the next level. It is exciting.”
How will Villarreal B play?
“Despite the youth of our players, we need to be a team that takes the initiative and goes out to win games. What we showed with the C team is that we can be a brave side on the pitch.”
This season’s objective
“There is a sporting goal, of course, but the main objective is player development. We want them to grow, to compete better and to be ready in case they are called up to the first team. That is what a B team is for. We have to take it step by step. The goal is for players to improve and grow, so they can be ready for the future.”
A look at the division
“I have experience in Segunda B and it is a very tough league. The level of the opposition is very high. It will be a difficult season, but also a really exciting one for all of us. Football is about challenges, and everyone sets short-term goals. These are new ambitions.”
A strong season with Villarreal C
“The assessment is a positive one if we look at the main objective, which was to help players grow and develop. It is a tough division for such young players, especially because of the conditions of the pitches. It is a different type of football. We had a good season, but you always want more. It was a shame, because it was in our hands to reach the play-offs.”
