Marcelino’s side are the third-highest points scorers of 2025 in domestic competition
Villarreal CF and Marcelino continue to break records. The Yellow Submarine close out 2025 with historic figures in LaLiga, having amassed a total of 75 points from 36 matches played. An outstanding tally which, in a hypothetical calendar-year table, would place them third, behind only FC Barcelona (96 points from 37 matches) and Real Madrid (86 points from 38 games), and ahead of Atlético de Madrid (72 points from 38 fixtures).
It is also worth noting that Marcelino’s side could have accumulated an even higher points total had the match against Levante UD, originally scheduled for 14 December, not been postponed due to adverse weather conditions. Meanwhile, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid have already played their respective Matchday 19 fixtures, which coincide with the Spanish Super Cup in which all three teams are currently involved.
Villarreal’s 2025 LaLiga campaign has been flawless and historic. The numbers speak for themselves. The 75 points collected in 2025 represent the highest tally the club has ever achieved in a single calendar year, closely followed by the 74 points in 2008, 73 in 2005 and 72 in 2007.
Villarreal’s 2025 in LaLiga can be divided into two distinct phases. The first corresponds to the second half of the 2024/25 season, marked by battles against direct rivals such as Real Betis and Athletic Club for qualification to the UEFA Champions League. During that period, the Yellow Submarine secured impressive victories against Betis (1-2 at the Benito Villamarín), Girona (0-2) in the final stretch of the campaign, and enjoyed a memorable away trip to Montilivi. They also defeated FC Barcelona (2-3), eventual LaLiga champions, to confirm their return to the UEFA Champions League three seasons later.
The second phase, corresponding to the opening stretch of the 2025/26 season, saw Villarreal record the best start in their history in Spain’s top flight, collecting 29 points from the first 13 matchdays—surpassing the previous record of 28 points set in the 2007/08 campaign—after defeating RCD Mallorca (2-1). That run was extended with victories over Real Sociedad (2-3) and Getafe (2-0) on matchdays 14 and 15 respectively, before coming to an end with a defeat against FC Barcelona (0-2).
