Calleja believes it was his side’s intensity that took them past Celta
Hard work and high tempo. For the Villarreal Manager, Javi Calleja, these factors were key in the Submarine’s victory against RC Celta de Vigo (0-1). The Yellows boss said his side knew how to adapt to the circumstances to pick up a very important win at the Balaídos stadium: “We had experience of losses from other matches and we didn’t want that to happen again. We knew how to react to each moment of the game and turn it in our favour. We needed to be more clinical on the counterattack, that would have been key to create more chances or extend our lead”.
According to the Manager, another of the keys to his side’s success was their defensive performance, making them even more solid. “We have to adapt ourselves to the circumstances and combine our style of play with being solid at the back”.
In addition, Calleja also emphasised the equality of the teams in the league this season, as only 12 points separate Villarreal in sixth place from the relegation zone. “There’s a lot of the season left, it’s been quite equal so far, the teams in the middle of the table are competing very well and making it tough for every team. Celta will be trying to get one of the European spots all season, we consider them direct rivals. It was important to get this win to take us away from those on our heels and for our confidence to keep growing”.
