Villarreal Women move out of the relegation zone thanks to goals from Lauris and Maria Ferreira
Villarreal Women came into the game needing to get back to winning ways after their 2-0 defeat to CA Osasuna in order to climb out of the relegation zone. With the clear message of having seven finals ahead of them, Jordi Ferriols’s side settled the first one very comfortably thanks to goals from Lauris and Maria Ferreira.
The game started with the Yellows trying to take the initiative from the opening whistle. In fact, in the first quarter of an hour, the home side had a double chance after a counter led by Lauris, but both Aixa and Alexia Jr’s shots were blocked by away defenders. Shortly afterwards, it was Lucía Gómez who had the chance to open the scoring, but her shot went over the crossbar.
For their part, CD Getafe tried through Marta Charle, but her shot did not trouble Montse Quesada. Jordi Ferriols’ side took the lead in the 23rd minute, when Lauris struck for her fifth goal of the game to make it 1-0.
After the restart, Getafe came out with more impetus in search of an equaliser, putting the Yellows in some trouble. In fact, Marta Charle shot from out wide on the left, but Quesada was able to claim the ball without any problems. The away side had a couple more chances, but both Quesada and the Yellows’ defence held firm, preventing the visitors from equalising.
The bad news for Villarreal Women was the injury to Marianela Szymanowski, who was forced off the pitch just 20 minutes after coming on.
Maria Ferreira had the last word in the game. The Portuguese had three shots in stoppage time, but the first two were both unsuccessful, but it was third time lucky for her. Her shot hit the post, but the rebound fell to her and she sealed the win for Villarreal Women (2-0).
