Villarreal CF face the Portuguese side for the third meeting in summer, with the match kicking off today at 8:30pm CEST
Villarreal CF and Sporting CP will meet once again this summer in a friendly fixture, having also faced each other in 2022 and 2023. The match will take place today at 8:30pm CEST at the Estádio Nacional. It will be the third match of the Yellows’ pre-season schedule.
The two clubs also have a shared history in European competition. In 2019, they met in the UEFA Europa League Round of 32. Villarreal came out on top in the tie, winning 0-1 away and drawing 1-1 at home.
Founded on 1st July 1906, Sporting Club de Portugal is the third most successful club in Portuguese football history, with a total of 57 trophies: 21 Portuguese league titles, 22 Portuguese Cups, 10 Super Cups and 4 League Cups. The club is part of Portugal’s famed “Big Three,” alongside Benfica and FC Porto.
Sporting CP play their home matches at the Estádio José Alvalade, which holds 50,000 spectators. Based in Lisbon, the club shares the Portuguese capital with historic rivals Benfica.
Sporting are the current champions of both the league and the Portuguese Cup. Their manager, Rui Borges, joined the club in December 2024 from Vitória SC and guided the team to a domestic double.
Among their most famous alumni is Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest players of all time, who made his professional debut for the club at the age of 17 after rising through their youth system. Other standout names include Luís Figo, Paulo Futre and Raphinha.
