The Yellows’ coach believes his side let a chance slip to extend their lead over their closest rivals
The Villarreal coach, Marcelino García Toral, said after the 1-1 league draw against Oviedo that the result was acceptable, although he felt his team missed an opportunity to strengthen their position at the top: “I am more satisfied with the result than the performance. In the first half we controlled the match and put ourselves in a very favourable position, but in the second half we were below our usual level. We pick up another point that allows us to extend our lead over fourth slightly, but we’ve missed a chance to make that gap even bigger. A team like ours has to manage the second half better, although I think the draw was fair.”
The Yellows’ coach also praised the home side, who arrived into the match under real pressure. “I pick the team to win and they know what they have to do because we work on it every day in training and have been doing so for a long time. Today we faced a side that was in real need of points and backed by an outstanding crowd. That makes things more difficult because the opponent is highly motivated. As the minutes went by, we adapted to leading the game in terms of the score, but not in terms of our overall performance.”
