The Portuguese defender stated that the team is working to continue improving its defensive numbers
Renato Veiga spoke to the media this Wednesday in a press conference to discuss the latest news surrounding Villarreal CF.
He is the player with the most minutes played this season under Marcelino. The Portuguese defender has accumulated a total of 2,616 minutes across LALIGA, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Regarding this important statistic—which reflects the coaching staff’s confidence in him—Veiga prefers not to place too much emphasis on it: “Obviously it’s an important factor for any player, but I like to focus on the team. And right now, the focus is on Elche, who are our next opponent. We will try to get the three points,” the defender explained.
As for the upcoming match, the Portuguese defender praised their opponent’s style of play and warned about the difficulty of the challenge: “They are a team that play very good football. We already saw it in the match earlier this season. That’s why we’re focused on preparing the match in the best possible way, exactly as the coaching staff ask of us.”
Although he prefers to go game by game, Veiga acknowledges the big objective of qualifying for the Champions League again: “We focus on winning each match. Sometimes it works out better, sometimes worse. But it’s true that when you concede fewer goals, your chances of winning increase. We work to achieve that, and hopefully we can do it. If we manage that and we’re efficient up front, I’m sure we’ll win many games.”
Finally, the Portuguese international highlighted the positive atmosphere and the quality that exists within the squad: “The whole team has a lot of talent and is also made up of great people. The energy is good and the team works very well.”
