Villarreal U19s beat Legia Warsaw 2-1 thanks to goals from Hugo López and Julio Arjona to book their place in the next round
Villarreal U19s produced a very mature performance against Legia Warsaw 2-1 to seal a historic qualification for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Youth League. The young Yellows dominated proceedings and created numerous chances, finding their reward in the second half through superb goals from Hugo López and Julio Arjona.
From the outset, the team showed intensity, ambition and composure on the ball. The first big opportunity arrived in the 21st minute, when Iker Adelantado tried his luck from the edge of the box, but his effort sailed over the bar. The side coached by Pepe Reina continued to press and, in the 27th minute, José Ángel Gaitán came close to scoring after spotting the goalkeeper off his line. However, Kosiorek intervened to deny him.
In the 32nd minute, the Polish side were reduced to ten men after Szymon Chojecki brought down Gaitán with a reckless challenge. From the resulting free kick, Hugo López struck the ball with intent, though it was saved well by the goalkeeper. With a numerical advantage, Villarreal stepped up their dominance and searched for spaces. Adrián Vivo and Alejandro Palomares both had chances, but the ball would not find the net and the match went into half-time goalless.
After the break, the young Groguets maintained their tempo and found the breakthrough in the 54th minute. Following an excellent team move, Álvaro Alcaide combined with Iker Adelantado, who returned the ball to Alcaide. He cut inside and slipped a pass back to Hugo López, who calmly finished to make it 1-0.
In the 59th minute, Iker Adelantado tested the goalkeeper again with another effort, and Villarreal continued to threaten. The decisive second goal arrived in the 89th minute, scored by Julio Arjona after a magnificent cross from Adrián Vivo. The Yellows remained solid in the closing stages despite two very dangerous chances for the visitors. Pau Polo produced a fine save to stop the first, while the second resulted in a penalty for the Warsaw side. Although Kováčik converted from the spot, it proved too little too late, and the match ended with a deserved victory for the Yellow team.
Villarreal U19s will face PSG in the Youth League quarter-finals on 17th or 18th March.
