The Asturian coach regretted the details that decided the defeat against Borussia Dortmund while praising the team’s effort
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral analysed the 4-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the press room at the BVB Stadion Dortmund.
To begin with, the Asturian reflected on how the match had unfolded: “When you lose 4-0, it’s sometimes difficult to explain the result when the game went the way it did. Any small mistake can punish you, but I think we played well.”
He explained that, after an early period in which the home side dominated without creating many clear chances, the team adjusted and began to threaten: “We made a correction and started to take control and create chances. However, then came that moment at the end of the first half.”
Marcelino also analysed the start of the second half, when the match changed dramatically: “We had a chance to equalise, but then the penalty and the red card came. In two minutes, the game slipped away from us. I have nothing to reproach the players for. I congratulate them for their work. It’s a shame that in key moments the details and the finishing weren’t on our side.”
Regarding the action that led to the second goal, he added: “The handball exists. Without that touch, the ball doesn’t reach his teammate.” Even so, he admitted the team could have defended better: “Knowing the ball was going to the far post, we could have defended it better.”
Finally, the coach regretted the lack of finishing during the opening stages, when Villarreal created clear chances: “We had opportunities to take the lead, but we weren’t able to finish them, and here you can’t afford to miss.” Despite the final scoreline, Marcelino insisted he did not feel the team were inferior: “I have nothing to criticise the team for. We are all disappointed, because we don’t feel we were inferior to the opponent.”
