If Villarreal beat RCD Mallorca at the Estadio de la Cerámica, they will surpass their best-ever points tally in LALIGA after the first 13 matches
A fantastic opportunity. Villarreal host RCD Mallorca this Saturday at the Estadio de la Cerámica (9pm CET) aiming for a victory that would see them record their best start in LaLiga history.
After twelve rounds, Marcelino García Toral’s side have collected 26 points from eight wins, two draws and two defeats. An impressive record that has placed them third in the table.
Only once in their history in the top flight has the Yellow Submarine earned more points at this stage of the season. That was in the 2007/08 campaign, when they had 27 points after 12 games and then drew with Almería (1-1) in the following round, taking their tally to 28 points.
A win against RCD Mallorca on Saturday would bring Villarreal to 29 points, surpassing the 28 from 2007-08. That season’s strong start helped the Yellow Submarine secure a historic league runners-up finish.
Last season, Villarreal also enjoyed an excellent start under Marcelino, collecting 24 points in the first twelve rounds, although a draw against Osasuna in the 13th game took them to 25 points in the opening third of the season.
Three league games without conceding, nine points secured
Villarreal go into this match full of confidence after their last three LaLiga wins against Valencia (0-2), Rayo Vallecano (4-0) and RCD Espanyol (0-2). In all three games, they kept a clean sheet.
RCD Mallorca will be looking to take three points at the Estadio de la Cerámica after their narrow 1-0 victory over Getafe at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix. The Balearic side sit 15th in the table with 12 points from 12 games, with three wins, three draws and six defeats.
Two key figures face off
Both teams are relying on the fine form of two recognised stars. For Villarreal, Gerard Moreno has returned from injury in the best possible way. The Catalan striker has scored in Villarreal’s last three league matches against Valencia, Rayo and Espanyol — three goals in five games. Impressive.
For Mallorca, Kosovan forward Vedat Muriqi is the main man. The ‘Pirate’ has six goals in ten appearances and is a crucial figure for his side.
