The head coach was pleased with three straight wins and thanked the fans for the atmosphere at La Cerámica
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media after the Submarine’s important 1-0 win over Athletic Club at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
The Yellows’ boss highlighted how his side improved after the break to secure victory:
“In the first half we were stretched and disorganised. We allowed them to dominate us in our own half. We were late into challenges and slow to react, which gave the opponent control. Even though we had a few chances, the feeling wasn’t good. At half-time we adjusted and were superior to Athletic. We created chances and stopped them from threatening us.”
Marcelino also emphasised the support of the fans, which he felt was crucial in helping the team claim a third consecutive win: “I’m very happy and grateful to the fans for how they’ve supported us. They are creating a fantastic atmosphere. It gives us an extra lift to feel them involved with the team. I want to thank them, just as I thank the players, who turned things around in the second half.”
Satisfied with the win, Marcelino also looked ahead ambitiously to the next game against Juventus:
“Now we want to beat Juve. We’re expecting a great atmosphere and we ask the fans to help us again. It’s very difficult to beat a team of that calibre, but this squad has the ambition, enthusiasm and ability to do it.”
