The Yellow Submarine coach regretted that victory slipped away in stoppage time
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media following the 1-1 draw against RC Celta at Abanca Balaídos.
The Asturian coach lamented the late equaliser: “It leaves a bad taste. We had victory in our hands and didn’t manage to close it out. It’s a shame, but that’s football.”
Despite this, Marcelino acknowledged that, while the draw may be fair, it hurts because of how it came about: “When it’s almost in our pocket, it’s bitter to see it slip away like that. It was stoppage time, we were packed in at the back, and the goal came from a long ball and a second chance. We have to keep working and improving.”
For Marcelino, the draw does not overshadow his players’ efforts, which he praised: “I congratulate them for the effort they put in, despite the final result. They worked hard off the ball, showing solidarity and solidity, even if we were a bit off and inconsistent with possession.”
Finally, the Villarreal coach admitted his dissatisfaction with the result but is pleased with his team’s strong start to the season: “The overall balance is very good. We wanted nine points given the way things had gone, but seven points is positive. Right now we are sad because we had it in our hands and didn’t manage to finish it. With perspective, we will value the points, but for now, we can’t help feeling disappointed.”
