The Villarreal B head coach faces the season with great enthusiasm and is looking forward to the opener against AD Alcorcón
Villarreal B head coach David Albelda spoke to the media to analyse the Mini Submarine’s league opener and preview the clash with AD Alcorcón, which will be played this Monday at 7:30pm CEST at the Mini Estadi at the Ciudad Deportiva José Manuel Llaneza.
An exciting challenge
“I’m excited. It’s a new season and a kind of change of cycle, as we often say in football, because the squad is very young and almost completely renewed. But this creates excitement, and it creates excitement so that the players who are just starting out can progress. In fact, we’ve got very young players, even a lad born in 2008. It’s good to see how they compete and, I repeat, it’s exciting for everyone.”
The objective
“Being Villarreal B, which is a B team, I don’t think it’s fair or right to talk about objectives like promotion or avoiding relegation. The main objective is for the players to progress both individually and collectively and for that progress to help them when they get opportunities with the first team in what will be a demanding season.”
Personal objective
“On a personal level it’s a difficult challenge, but one that excites me. I’m here to replace Miguel Álvarez, which is no easy task, as he was here for eight seasons and managed to take the team up to the Second Division. I’d be satisfied seeing the players progress. If the team progresses and the players progress, then things will go well for me too.”
A message to the squad
“They shouldn’t feel any pressure. They just have to show their potential. They’re young, but if they’re here it’s because we believe they have the potential to be here and they should feel ready to show their best version.”
The debut against AD Alcorcón
“We’re really looking forward to it. We head into the game with excitement and ambition, even more so because it’s at home. Pre-season went well and I think we’re ready to put in a good performance and go for the win. Beyond the result, we’re going to try to stay united, being an attacking team, a dominant team and one that wants to have the ball.”
Keys to the season
“We have to focus on ourselves. Find a way, an identity and, knowing we’re a reserve team, try to grow. I wouldn’t worry too much about results, especially in the first part of the season. The players’ progress is the most important thing and, if they progress, results will be more likely to come.”
