The Canadian scored a hat-trick and delivered the best performance of his professional career against Girona FC
Tajon Buchanan, MVP against Girona FC on Matchday 2 of LALIGA EA Sports, produced a historic hat-trick to become the first Canadian ever to score three goals in a single game in Spain’s top flight. Not only that, the Brampton (Ontario) native of Jamaican descent also netted the first hat-trick of his career this past Sunday, 24th August.
His three goals against the Catalan side showcased his pace and outstanding technical ability. In doing so, the winger joined the select group of players to have scored a hat-trick for Villarreal CF in LALIGA. Before Buchanan, only 12 players had achieved this feat: Riquelme, Forlán, Uche, Bakambu, Bacca, Gerard Moreno, Danjuma, Yeremy, Morales, Sorloth, Barry, and now Tajon Buchanan.
This was not the only record Buchanan broke on the day. With his treble, he became the first Canadian footballer to score a hat-trick in LALIGA and just the second to do so in Europe’s top five leagues, following Jonathan David.
In fact, fewer than ten Canadians have ever appeared in LALIGA. The top scorer remains Cyle Larin with 18 goals, although Buchanan already has four strikes to his name from just 15 games in Spain’s top flight.
In short, with this historic display, Buchanan has written his name not only into Villarreal CF’s recent history, but also into Canadian football history.
