The national team remains unbeaten in the three matches played in the city of Vila-real
The Estadio de la Cerámica has hosted three matches featuring the Spanish national team. La Roja remain unbeaten in their fixtures in Vila-real, with an impressive record of two wins and one draw.
The first match took place on 5th June 1999, marking a historic moment for both the national team and Villarreal CF. While the Yellow Submarine were battling to stay up in their first-ever season in the top flight, Spain faced San Marino at El Madrigal in a UEFA Euro 2000 qualifier. The team coached by José Antonio Camacho claimed a resounding 9-0 victory, one of the biggest wins in the history of the national side. On that day, the goals were scored by Fernando Hierro, Raúl, Gaizka Mendieta, Joseba Etxeberria (2), Luis Enrique (3), and Gennari with an own goal.
The second visit came on 19th November 2008, in a friendly against Chile at the former El Madrigal. Spain, reigning European champions at the time, showed their strength and secured a 3-0 win with goals from David Villa, Fernando Torres and Santi Cazorla, who was then shining in the Villarreal CF shirt. It was a special night for the Yellows’ faithful.
The third and most recent occasion came on 3rd June 2018, at the newly renovated Estadio de la Cerámica. In a friendly ahead of the World Cup in Russia, Spain drew 1-1 with Switzerland, with a goal from Álvaro Odriozola.
With three matches played and no defeats, the Estadio de la Cerámica remains a favourable venue for the Spanish national team a stadium that has already earned its place in La Roja’s recent history.
