The Submarine arrive in Gran Canaria with the aim of taking all three points and staying in the European places
Villarreal CF fly to the Canary Islands to face UD Las Palmas, in what will be Sergi Cardona’s long-awaited return to the islands. The Catalan defender, who played four seasons there, is in great form for the match against his former team. The game, corresponding to Matchday 23 of the 2024/25 LALIGA EA Sports, will be played at the Estadio de Gran Canaria (Saturday 8th February, at 6:30pm CET).
Equal with Óscar Mingueza of RC Celta, Cardona is the full-back with the most assists in LALIGA EA Sports. In his first season with the Submarine, he has five assists, four of them in the last two games played at the Estadio de la Cerámica, which ended in a 4-0 win over RCD Mallorca and a 5-1 win over Real Valladolid CF. In both matches, the Catalan was a key player in securing the team’s convincing victories thanks to his ability to assist from the wing.
With the team in impressive form, Villarreal CF return to the Estadio Gran Canaria with the aim of securing another win, which if it materialises would be their third in four games, and to extend the good feelings of this 2025.
The Submarine are currently in fifth place and arrive in the Canary Islands with a record of three wins, one draw and just one defeat in their last five games, in which they have scored 15 goals and conceded four. UD Las Palmas, meanwhile, have only managed to make it three points from three in their last five games, with a record of four points from the last 15 possible points.
As for their home record, Diego Martínez’s side have the fourth worst record at home, winning just three of their eleven games at the Estadio Gran Canaria. These records contrast with those of Marcelino’s side, who have been able to make the most of their visits to other grounds, consolidating themselves as one of the strongest teams when they play away from La Cerámica. The Submarine have won five and drawn three of their eleven matches away from home.
The precedents between the two teams are favourable to the Groguets. Although in the last meeting on the islands, Las Palmas inflicted a crushing defeat on Marcelino’s side in January 2024. The defeat was a turning point in the Submarine’s dynamic, as they picked up the pace and enjoyed an impressive second half of the season. In the current season, Villarreal won the first leg at La Ceramica 3-1, with goals from Nicolas Pepe, Thierno Barry and Álex Baena.
