The Villarreal head coach has been self-critical after the defeat against Pontevedra in the Copa del Rey
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral was disappointed to see his side eliminated in the Copa del Rey against Pontevedra (1-0). ‘We faced an opponent who were far superior to us. We were far behind in all aspects of the game. We have to congratulate Pontevedra, who were better than us,” he said.
For Marcelino, the mental aspect was fundamental in the outcome of the match: ‘”‘m the most responsible for this defeat, as I’m the head coach of the team. I must not have been able to motivate them enough. We didn’t perform in the right way. Our opponents outplayed us. Our mental preparation for this match was not the right one.”
The Asturian coach advocates self-criticism. “The team was unknown in relation to what we are doing in the league. Pontevedra outplayed us in everything. We will try not to repeat performances like this. The team was very poor. I don’t remember a clear goal scoring chance we had. It’s a tough blow. We didn’t deserve to go through. It would have been unfair to win this match. We didn’t do anything to get a favourable result. It’s a tough and unexpected blow. We are professionals and it shouldn’t affect us. We have to draw conclusions. With this level of performance, it’s impossible to get through a knockout round in the Copa del Rey,” he concluded.
