Marcelino’s team will be looking for an upset against Real Madrid, who have not lost at home since April 2023
Villarreal CF want to do it again. The Submarine will try to spring a surprise and beat Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. An achievement that no team has managed since 8th April 2023, when the Groguets beat Los Blancos with a double from a spectacular Samu Chukwueze.
More than a year and a half later, the Groguets return to the Santiago Bernabéu in great form. The Yellows are third, just one point behind Los Blancos, after eight matchdays of competition. Marcelino’s side’s good start to the season has boosted the confidence of the fans, who will be represented by almost 1,000 groguets in the Spanish capital.
So far, the Submarine are one of the best visitors in the league. They have yet to lose away from La Cerámica and have won against Sevilla, Mallorca and Espanyol, with only a draw against Valencia.
This surprising away dynamic started to build last season. During the second half of the 2023/24 season, the Yellow Submarins won at FC Barcelona, Real Sociedad and Real Betis.
In terms of precedents at the Santiago Bernabéu, Villarreal have managed to win in two of the last seven visits there. A feat they failed to achieve in any of their previous 17 games at the Santiago Bernabéu. However, since the Submarine did so in 2023, no other team in the world has managed to come away with a win at the Bernabéu.
