Villarreal B head coach Miguel Álvarez appeared in front of the media ahead of the match against CD Lugo, corresponding to Matchday 6 of the 2022/23 LaLiga SmartBank season on Saturday 17th September at 2pm CEST at the Mini Estadi.
Focus in the early stages
“It’s not bad luck. It’s focus and going out with the right rhythm of activation at the start of the game. It’s one of the jobs we’ve done with the B team over the years, to come out with the right rhythm from the first to the 15th minute and from the 45th to the 60th minute. But there is a positive side, that the team after that has the personality to play the way they did in a new context and a new atmosphere for them with so many people on the pitch and an adverse result. Now we have homework on the coaching staff and the players. We all have to do our best.”
The opposition
“They are a modest team, but they compete at a top level, which is why they have been in the division for so many years. They’re a team that have had good seasons year after year. They’ve changed coach and they’re still as competitive as before. They have players with a lot of experience and dominate registers that are vital in this category, such as direct play, counter-attacking and set pieces. They are a very difficult opponent, especially if they take the lead.”
Staying on track
“A 3-0 win over Mirandés won’t take us off our journey, nor will a 4-1 loss at Levante. We have a very clear roadmap in terms of work and objectives. We’re living the moment with the level of demand that the division deserves. We are happy in terms of points, but we have to be demanding and master other registers to be competitive. It’s been a week of hard work. We’re very happy with the lads, who are very self-critical and know what the team needs.”
The Yellows Academy, with the first team
“We’re very happy with all the academy boys. They always give their all and never lower their level. That’s why there are so many boys with the first team and a lot in professional football. There’s a lot of hard work behind all of this, not just mine, but from the coaches from Villarreal C, the U19s, etc. And the first-team coach puts the finishing touch to it. The best prestige for a coaching staff is for their boys to be at the top.”
