The fifth European semi-final
Throughout their history, the Submarine had previously reached the semi-finals of European competition on four previous occasions. The first time was in the 2003/04 season, when the Submarine faced Valencia CF in the old UEFA Cup after beating Celtic FC in the quarter-finals.
Only two seasons later, Villarreal wrote one of the most successful pages of their history, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League semi-finals against Arsenal FC, after being Inter Milan.
In the 2010/11 season, Villarreal reached the same stage of the UEFA Europa League, after having beaten Twente in the quarter-finals, coming up against Porto. Finally, the last European semi-final that the Yellows have been involved in was in the 2015/16 season, when they faced Liverpool FC after defeating Sparta Prague in the quarter-finals.
