Villarreal lose against the side from Madrid despite going ahead through a Gerard Moreno goal (1-2)
Villarreal lost against Leganés at the Estadio de la Cerámica (1-2) despite going ahead on the scoreboard through an early Gerard Moreno goal. Two goals from Óscar in the second half gave the side from Madrid the three points.
Javi Calleja lined up with a starting XI with 11 Spaniards for the third match in a row. This time, Moi Gómez came in for Javi Ontiveros. The Yellows’ attacking style paid off early on.
With four minutes gone, it was 1-0. Santi Cazorla reached the touchline and played a perfect cross for Gerard to head home. A goal full of quality.
The Yellows were dominating, although the away side were also dangerous. They had their best chance of the first half in the 19th minute. Guido Carrillo hit the post after forcing Sergio Asenjo into a great save.
Villarreal were clear about how they could hurt Leganés in the first half, but they struggled to find the back of the net. They had clear chances but didn’t trouble Iván Cuéllar.
The best of those chances came just before the break. Paco Alcácer pulled back his cross to the edge of the area where Gerard ran onto it and forced Cuéllar to make a good save. The rebound fell to Moi whose effort from close range went just over the bar.
The Submarine let Leganés back into the game at the start of the second half. Óscar equalised for the visitors with a tremendous strike from the top of the box as the ball went in off the underside of Asenjo’s crossbar.
The side from Madrid then went on to turn the scoreline around with a goal from the penalty spot after Pau brought down Assalé. Óscar stepped up take the spot kick and converted to make it 1-2 (m. 69).
The Yellows attacked in the final minutes but to no avail. Villarreal’s next match is against RC Celta de Vigo at Balaídos (Saturday, 9pm CET).
