The Yellows shotstopper has broken the barrier of 150 official matches with Villarreal
Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo made his 151st appearance in the colours of the Yellow Submarine in the victory against CD Leganés on Sunday, joining a select club of ‘groguet’ legends.
The Yellows No.1, who debuted for Villarreal in the 2013/14 season, is currently in his sixth campaign with the club, where he’s enjoying the best part of his professional career. Since arriving in Villarreal, he’s been the main man in a goal previously occupied by internationals like Pepe Reina and Diego López.
What’s more, as a Villarreal player, Asenjo has been called up by the Spanish national team, and made his debut for La Roja in a friendly against Bosnia in 2016, which ended 3-1 to Spain.
Despite suffering two long-term injuries while at Villarreal, Asenjo has always fought back to return stronger. Not in vain, the Spanish goalkeeper has one of the best records in the club’s history. López (230) is the only goalkeeper to make more appearances at the elite level for the club and Asenjo has a great goals conceded per game average (1.06) and a high percentage of unbeaten matches (35.7%), which puts him among the great all-time Yellow Submarine goalkeepers.
Seven footballers in the current squad have made more than 150 appearances in official matches for the Yellows:
Bruno Soriano: 418 matches.
Mario Gaspar: 313 matches.
Manu Trigueros: 263 matches.
Santi Cazorla: 251 matches.
Jaume Costa: 215 matches.
Víctor Ruiz: 160 matches.
Asenjo: 151 matches.
