Asenjo is sure that the international break will help the team work on getting back to winning ways
Villarreal CF goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo looks at the pause in the league fixtures due to international games as a positive, saying: “This fortnight will serve us well in terms of us working on what we need to in order to resolve the problems we have had in the three games so far.”
What’s more, the Yellows’ number one has sent out a message of calm, adding: “It is clear that the results haven’t reflected the football we’ve played, but there is no need to be worried. Two bad results aren’t going to change how we think. Honestly, I don’t think any team has dominated a game against us, but it is true that they’ve made the most of our errors to penalise us by scoring. Now we have to improve on those little mistakes.”
In fact, Asenjo underlined the quality of the team. “We’re a very competitive side and I believe we have enough quality to rise up the table, enough to be back fighting for the European spots,” he said. “The next match against Leganés won’t be easy, but the team is very motivated and we want to start putting points on the board.”
The goalie also used the press conference to analyse Villarreal’s Europa League rivals: “It is a tough group, but in turn, it is an exciting challenge. We are going to try and give our best and finish on top of the group. What’s more, for the fans, there will be three big games at the Estadio de la Cerámica.”
To finish, Asenjo praised new Yellows arrival, Chilean midfielder Manuel Iturra: “He is a player with a long career who’s played a lot in the Spanish top flight, so I am sure he will put in some great performances for us.”
