Asenjo highlights the great opportunity to get a win against a direct rival like Real Sociedad
In today’s press conference, Villarreal goalkeeper, Sergio Asenjo, highlighted just how high a level of football Real Sociedad are playing: “They’re a great team. The have players of a really high level that play spectacular football. The results aren’t going their way, but they always dominate matches and deserve better. Despite their situation, they are direct rivals for us and a win against them would be a huge step forward for us”.
The Yellow number 1 is focused on “maintaining positive results at the Estadio de la Cerámica”, but at the same time he recognises how difficult the second round of fixtures will be: “We want to keep playing at our top level and be strong in front of our fans. We beat Levante and we want to continue on the same lines, but we know that the most difficult part of the season is to come and the demand in these next few months will be really high. We intend to live up to it though”.
Regarding the fight for European spots, Asenjo quietened as he stated that the execution of objectives happens by “focusing on ourselves”. “What our rivals do doesn’t depend on us. We have to keep playing to our best level and pick up the maximum amount of points possible”, he affirmed.
Lastly, with repsect to the possibility of returning to the Spanish national team in the next call-up, Asenjo was “excited”, but says that he is completely focused on enjoying his football with the Yellow Submarine: “It’s still a while until we’ll be thinking about the national team. The most important thing is that I’ve recovered and I’m finding my best form. I want to enjoy playing for Villarreal to the max every weekend and if the opportunity comes up to represent my country, I’ll be honoured, but I’m not worried about that at the moment”.
