Mario analyzed the current situation of the LaLiga Santander’s least scored on team
The Villarreal CF right back, Mario Gaspar, analyzed the Submarine’s current situation as the team to have conceded the fewest goals in the LaLiga Santander, with only 14 goals in 21 matches (0.67 per game). According to Mario, this is due to the great defensive work of the whole team all season long: “The key to being at the top of the table is to keep clean sheets and to keep defending as we have been until now, to pick up plenty of points over the course of the season. It’s also really important to have a goalkeeper like Asenjo, who helps us to win a lot of points”. In fact, Villarreal are putting together their best defensive numbers in history at this stage of the season in the Spanish top flight.
Mario is one of the defensive pillars in Fran Escribá’s back four. The Yellows number 2 has played 2,347 minutes in all competitions so far this season; 21 matches in the LaLiga Santander, 3 in the Copa del Rey, 2 in the Champions league play-offs and 1 in the UEFA Europa League. The full back from Novelda insisted that it is the day to day work that keeps the team solid, after they picked up a vital point at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium (0-0): “We have to keep working hard, creating as many goal scoring opportunities as possible and surely at home we’ll create a lot more danger against Málaga CF”.
With regard to the fight for European spots, the Submarine defence know that it will be close to qualify for the UEFA Europa Legaue: “It’s difficult to qualify for Europe and there are many rivals fighting for those places. It’s really even, which is why we’re going to have to work really hard until the end of the season. We want to qualify, we’re on the right track to do it and we’re going to fight until the end”.
To finish, Mario spoke about his teammate Roberto Soldado: “We can’t wait to have him back with us for a game. Last season he was a key player and he can give us an alternative up front”.
