The Cantabrian defender is excited ahead of the Valencia match at the Estadio de la Cerámica
It will be Álvaro González’s first Villarreal-Valencia derby, but he cannot wait for it. He is used to derbies. He has played in many. Thus, the Cantabrian defender was really enthusiastic ahead of the match against Valencia that will be played this Saturday at the Estadio de la Cerámica (8:45pm CET): “It’ll be a great match. Derbies are always special. We play at home and we have to take this step forward confidently. At the Riazor stadium we didn’t create many chances, but the team is reliable defensively. From there we’ll try to get the three points that would give us that breather at the top of the table”.
For Álvaro, the fact that the team have conceded the fewest goals in the LaLiga Santander is evidence of the sacrifice of all the Yellow players: “When we talk about our defensive work we must take into account the work of the entire team. It’s down to the generosity of everyone that we are the least scored on team in LaLiga. The goals will come because we have great strikers. We want to improve up front to create more chances against a Valencia who are coming from a win at home and will want to link that with another positive result. We’ve demonstrated that we’re an all-round team. In several games we’ve scored a lot of goals. If you always keep a clean sheet you pick up points and we work from that base”.
According to the Yellows number 12, the team should go out with maximum intensity to pick up three very important points: “Derbies are matches that everyone wants to win. I played them in Barcelona. We’ll try to play our game and make sure Valencia can’t use their weapons. We will have to give our best, like in the matches against Atlético and Barcelona. There’s never a lack of motivation in derbies. The stadium is always full and the fans really excited. We must take advantage to get back on track and winning, to establish ourselves at the top of the table”.
To finish, Álvaro warned of Valencia’s potential: “They looked very good against Espanyol. They will come here to the Estadio de la Cerámica and give everything, but the most important thing is how we play. If we perform like we have been until now we have a great chance of winning. Valencia have really good players. Whoever plays we will have to perform very well defensively. We want to dominate the game playing good football. From there though they can still cause us danger though, so when called for we must be strong in defence”.
