Villarreal B clinched the three points right at the end with goals by Carlos Martínez (2) and Miguelón
A deserved victory and three vital points. The Villarreal B team took down Mallorca B in a thrilling encounter that swung the Yellows’ way thanks to goals by Carlos Martínez (2) and Miguelón, the last scored in the final minutes of the game. Thus, the Yellows bid a fond farewell to 2016 after a tough match under heavy rainfall at the Mini Estadi.
Not even the numerous injuries in defence stopped Paco López’s side from getting the win. In fact, one of the heroes of the match was Miguelón, normally the right back for the Villarreal C team, who was moved up to the Reserves for this match and scored the definitive third (3-2).
The first half was full of goals. Despite the fact that the Mallorcan side went ahead in 34th minute, the Villarreal B team knew how to react and took the lead through two Carlos Martínez goals in the 38th and 44th minutes. Both the Mallorca B team’s goal as well as the Yellows Reserves’ second goal were ones to be remembered; the first was a great strike that flew straight into the top corner of Cantero’s net, and the second was great footwork by Carlos Martínez on the edge of the box and his shot went in off the inside of the far post.
Then, in the 73rd minute and after an unlucky series of events, the Mallorca B number 9, Cedric, scored the equalizer (2-2), in a play that was full of ricochets and saw the ball end up in the back of Cantero’s net. Just as it seemed the match would end in a share of the points, the fairytale ending came. Miguelón jumped on the rebound and made no mistake with his shot across goal to clinch the win.
