Villarreal CF extends the goalkeeper’s contract for three more seasons
Villarreal CF have come to an agreement for the extension of goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo’s contract, who will now wear Yellow until 2022. Thus, the keeper from Palencia, whose contract was originally up in 2019, is now tied to the Submarine for three more seasons. The official press conference celebrating the agreement will take place this Thursday after the morning training session at the Villarreal CF Training Ground (Ciudad Deportiva).
Asenjo came to Villarreal in the 2013/14 season on loan from Atlético de Madrid. That campaign he started 35 matches and the Submarine decided to sign him for the 2014/15 season. Since his arrival at the Yellow Submarine, Asenjo has played a total of 109 matches (9,805 minutes) between all official competitions, and in 40 of those he has kept a clean sheet.
So far in the 2016/17 season, Asenjo is the goalkeeper to have conceded the fewest goals in the LaLiga Santander, with only 10 goals in 15 matches (0.67). His excellent performance has led to him being called up for the Spanish national team once again by Julen Lopetegui. Not even his knee injuries have stopped him being an agile goalkeeper with outstanding reflexes. Asenjo is the safe hands for the Yellows between the posts.
