The Alicante native full back says the team want to “get more points than last season (64)”
Villarreal right back, Mario Gaspar, assured that this LaLiga break will do the team good to recharge their batteries, as they have played “many consecutive matches this month”. The number 2 also expressed his feelings, both on a personal and collective level. “The start to the season has been really good. We’re still undefeated and we have to work hard to stay at the top end of the table until the end of the season. It was normal to get better as we have done after so many changes at the last minute. The new players needed time to adjust. We’ve all had a boost from working on the same lines and this is key”, he explained.
In terms of the objectives set for this season he said “it’s still early to set them”. “We want to get more points than last season (64), but it won’t be easy. We have to make the most of the momentum we have and get ourselves a cushion beneath us like last year” he commented.

Mario also referred to the progressive improvement in the team’s play. “The team knows what we’re playing. We’ve been playing together for a long time and the new players have adapted really well. At the end of the season this amounts to a lot of points. The Manager gives us (the full backs) the freedom to get forward and help the attack. There are games you can get forward more, but the most important thing is to defend well because we’re defenders”.
In addition, the Yellows defender weighed up the importance and difficulty of the next few matches after the league break. “It’s important to get wins at home. We have two games coming up at El Madrigal and we have to win. The match against Celta, for example, will be really tough. They’re a great team that are playing in Europe and they beat Barcelona the other day. But what’s clear is that we can do damage to any team. Now we have more variety up front. Bit by bit we’re seeing the Manger’s work come to light. We have to keep working like this”, he explained.
“We are doing well as the numbers show. The team is always creating chances to win in every game. Sometimes these chances accompany the points more, but the most important thing is not to concede because this guarantees you more points” he concluded.
