El Madrigal showed support in memory of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster
Just minutes before kick off between Villarreal and Liverpool, and with the players lined up on the pitch, the Yellows fans wanted to show their support for the victims of the Hillsborough disaster that happened on 15th April 1989 in Sheffield, when 96 people were crushed to death against the stadium’s fencing due to severe overcrowding in the away stand.
The Yellows fans held a huge banner above their heads in the Fondo Sur stand (south stand) of El Madrigal stadium . On it, the words ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ were written and the number ‘96’, in memory of the 96 Reds fans that lost their lives during that FA Cup Semi-final clash.
27 years later, the victims’ families long struggle for the truth of what happened that day has at last been vindicated. The recent new ruling has confirmed that the 96 Liverpool supporters were killed unlawfully, due to the failings of the South Yorkshire police officers in command at the 1989 FA Cup Semi-final.
Thus, it was a fitting and touching tribute paid by Villarreal in El Madrigal in last night’s UEFA Europa League Semi-final after justice for the 96 has finally been won.
