The Villarreal CF rank first after defeating Atlético
A historic milestone. The epic victory achieved by Villarreal against Atlético de Madrid has made the Submarine La Liga’s top rank leader, the highest ranking in Spanish football. The Yellows were co-leaders at the beginning of the match day alongside Real Madrid and Celta de Vigo, but none of them was able to keep up with Villarreal on their respective matches (Málaga and Eibar).
The Yellows reach the leadership position in the table after getting 16 points out of the possible 18, with 5 straight victories and just one draw. This season’s start equals the best ever accomplished by the club, under the management of Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini in season 2008/2009. That season the Submarine drew on the 7th match, so if it is able to defeat Levante this upcoming game, it will perform the best start ever.
The Villarreal CF made its First Division début during season 98/99 and has since then played in the Spanish Top Ranks during 16 seasons, participating in European competitions 12 times.
