“We have to show that we want to beat Celta”

Marcelino underlined the need to improve at home to grow in LALIGA (Wednesday, 9:30pm CET)

Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke on Tuesday to analyse the match against RC Celta, corresponding to Matchday 18 of LALIGA EA Sports, which will take place this Wednesday at 9:30pm CET at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

To begin the press conference, he took stock of the situation: “We’re aware of the situation we’re in. Villarreal are not having the season we expected and the league table shows us the reality. We have 16 out of a possible 51 points and we have more defeats than the sum of wins and draws”.

The solution, for Marcelino, is to combine hard work, character and a positive mentality: “That’s the key to getting out of here. We’ve been competing a lot since I’ve been here. We are having difficulties with injuries, but we are professional and optimistic. We believe in the players and that, with hard work, the dynamic will change”.

In the same vein, the head coach was critical of the team’s mistakes: “An individual mistake can be detrimental to the team. We must minimise these individual mistakes and be united as a team. If we achieve both, we will be more competitive. In general, I’m satisfied, but we do need to correct these individual situations.”

In reference to the match against RC Celta, Marcelino warned of the difficulty of the match against a “very hard-working” team that makes it difficult for all their rivals: “We have a match against a difficult team. It’s at our ground. We have to face it with the mentality that we are going to win. Celta are going to make things difficult for us. They are a team that are an example for us. They conceded four goals against Athletic and then only conceded one goal in the following games. We must go out to win, intense and focused defensively and give them as few options as possible. So far, we’ve conceded and our opponents are taking advantage of that.”

On the other hand, the manager stressed the importance of improving our home record: “We need to press and we need the fans to help us and press as well. We need to win more games at home. Our numbers at La Cerámica can be improved a lot. Since we’ve been here, we’ve had one win and one defeat. Now we have to fight for that second win. It will be difficult, they have put all the teams in trouble. They have a great head coach and he’s going to demand a very good game from us, as well as being effective in the penalty area. We have a tough 90 minutes ahead of us, but we have to win and fight for it.”
