Villarreal Women lose to Athletic Club after Nahikari’s early goal
Villarreal Women, who continue to fight tooth and nail to achieve their goal of survival, took on an Athletic Club side in a state of grace -only four points behind the Champions League zone before the start of the match. The duel was not going to be an easy one, and so it proved during the 90 minutes of play. The home club made an early goal count to take all three points.
Villarreal Women found it a little difficult to get into the game due to the intensity of the Basque side. In fact, the Lionesses threatened as early as the fifth minute and made no mistake in the seventh minute when Nahikari, taking advantage of a counter-attack, sent the ball into the back of the net (1-0). From this point on, the Yellows began to feel more comfortable on the pitch and were able to play with greater fluency, creating a couple of clear chances after two corners. However, there was no luck in front of goal.
In the second half, Villarreal Women were down to 10 players after just 10 minutes. Claudia Iglesias was booked for her second yellow card. However, instead of giving up, the yellows gritted their teeth and gave their all in an attempt to equalise. However, the goal did not come.
Villarreal Women’s next match will be against SD Eibar on Friday 10th May, at 6:30pm CEST at the Mini Estadi at the José Manuel Llaneza Training Ground.
